How to get rid of cockroaches

No one likes the thought of cockroaches in their home, they are hard to find and hard to permanently keep out of your home but there are a few things you can do to make your home less appealing to these home invaders. The below are the two most important things you can do if you want to keep your home cockroach free:

Remove any potential food source

Cockroaches love when we leave food out for them, to make your home less appealing make sure you store fruit and vegetables in the fridge, make sure all your pantry items are securely sealed in bags or containers.  Keep floors clear of crumbs and food debris and take any rubbish our regularly as well AS remove any spills or standing water including in bathrooms to remove their source of water.  Regularly clean behind items like fridges and freezers where they can find both food and warmth.

Eliminate any potential hiding place

Cockroaches can enter your home through the smallest of cracks and hide in the tiniest of spaces, so eliminating these will help keep them at bay. Check your home for all potential hiding places things such as stacks of old magazines, cardboard boxes and general clutter.  Where possible store unused items up of the floor so cockroaches have no where to hide.  Do a thorough inspection of your home including any subfloor or roof space for gaps where cockroaches can enter your home.  Places could include around any ducting or cables as well as the spaces between floorboards and walls and under doors.  Use the appropriate sealant for any gaps in your homes structure and look at installing weather seal and draft stoppers on things like doors and windows to eliminate any gaps.

Once you have done your best to make your home less appealing to any new cockroaches you need to get rid of any that may have already moved into your home and selecting the best method to do this can sometimes be quite confusing.

The most common method is good old surface spray, which can work as a preventative and offers some long-term control, but they also have their drawbacks they are not effective on areas that are regularly washed, and some are not safe to use on areas where food is prepared or around children or pets so always check any warning labels on the product you buy.  There are also bait and traps that can be used along edges and again ensure they will not be accessed by children or animals.
