Termite Control requires skill and experience. There are lots of choices that can help, but the most important thing to remember is that every property is different, so your solution needs to be tailored to suit your property.

Types of Termites in Brisbane, Gold Coast & Sunshine Coast

In Brisbane specifically, homeowners need to watch out for three main types of termites: Subterranean termites (also known as white ants), Drywood termites, and Dampwood termites. Each type has its unique characteristics and behaviours that make it a threat to different areas of a home or property.

Subterranean termites are the most common type found in Brisbane and can be found in colonies underground or near sources of moisture such as leaky pipes or damp soil. They build mud tubes along walls or foundations to reach their food source above ground level.

Drywood termites prefer dry wood with low moisture content and can be found in wooden structures like roof timbers or furniture. These termites do not require contact with the soil to survive and can cause significant damage to wooden structures if left untreated.

Dampwood termites, as their name suggests, thrive in damp and moist environments. They are commonly found in decaying wood or areas with high humidity, such as bathrooms or basements. Dampwood termites are less common in urban areas but can still threaten homes near bodies of water or in older buildings with structural decay.

Our Types of Termite Treatment

Regarding Termite Treatments, there are no hard and fast rules, so our team at Termite Choice is all about giving Choice. At Termite Choices, we determine what best suits our client’s needs and recommend the right treatment for the individual property. In our sub-tropical climate of Brisbane, we need to ensure your property is covered correctly.

Chemical Barriers

A Chemical Termite Treated Zone is a chemical zone outside your home. It stops termites from entering your property, and its slow-acting formula allows time for one termite to spread the chemical to other termites so the entire colony is eradicated.

While deadly to termites, a chemical termite zone is completely safe for humans, pets and native animals. Chemical termite-treated zones are very effective and affordable, depending on the home and surroundings. At Termite Choices, we recommend and use FMC’s chemicals, which carry a $1 million dollar warranty.

There are two main types of chemical barriers: liquid soil treatments and baiting systems. Liquid soil treatments involve applying a liquid pesticide directly into the ground around the home’s foundation. This creates an invisible barrier that kills or repels termites as they try to enter your home.

The other option is baiting systems, which involve placing bait stations around your property. These stations contain wood or cellulose material that is attractive to termites and a slow-acting toxin that will be carried back to their colony, eventually eliminating it.

Physical Termite Barriers – Termite Treatment for Preconstruction and Renovation

The Building Code of Australia requires Physical Barriers or Replenishment Systems for all renovations and new dwellings.

A Physical Termite Barrier comprises a layer of chemical-treated webbing sealed between two sheets of plastic. It provides a ‘physical’ block to termites, and the chemical treatment also repels them. The Physical Termite Barrier we recommend is Homeguard; it not only repels, but if the termite stays in contact long enough, it will kill them.

Reticulation Systems

A Reticulation System (replenishment system) is a series of pipes buried under your slab or around the perimeter of your home; an access point allows a technician to pump chemicals into the pipe, which is then released through the pipes via inceptors into the surrounding soil. Depending on the chemical used, the system will generally need to be replenished between 5 – 8 years. An annual termite inspection is advised to monitor the system and check for any environmental changes.
